The goal of every business that advertises is to have a TV commercial that makes an impact. From our experience producing many different types of television ads for our clients over the years, we've found that there are key elements that make a commercial really effective. Here are our top five.
1. Break the Pattern
Because the attention span of our society is constantly shrinking, TV commercials need to be attention grabbing, and it is still very hard to get people to notice unless you break the pattern in some way. For instance starting with a cliched or boring premise and then changing it up - breaking the pattern in an unexpected way. The more contrasting that pivot is, the more effective and compelling the ad.
2. Don’t Be Boring
Always ask yourself whether the ad is something that you would genuinely enjoy and want to tell some one else to watch, too. Remember to be relevant to the audience you are targeting.
3. Focus on the First Three Seconds
Because we are constantly bombarded with media that rambles on, we have become adept at tuning out of repetitive messages and long-form story lines and automatically disengage after the first 3 seconds. So, it is important to engage and capture an audience’s attention immediately and keep it engaged. The first three seconds can be the key to engagement or disengagement.
4.. Tell a Compelling Story
Viewers today have very short attention spans and many people tune out conventional advertisements and TV commercials. Yet television is still a powerful medium if you find a way to draw in your audience. To do this, you have to get beyond the style of typical ads and tell a story
5. Communicate One Message Only
As with any effective marketing strategy, keeping your TV ads to the bare minimum will enhance the success of performing above the others. Customers may not be interested in everything you have to say. They only have room and time for one single message, so keep it simple.
